CITY OF ROCKFORD CONDUCTS WATER STUDY FOR PFOS
In response to recent information provided by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) that some of the water supplies in the Belmont area showed increased levels of Perfluorooctane Sulfonate (PFOS), the City of Rockford sent water samples for testing last week. Eurofins Eaton Laboratories of South Bend, Indiana - verified that the City of Rockford’s water supply contained no PFOS in the sample tested. City Manager Thad Beard said the results of the tests were expected. “Our well heads that supply water to the city are located in Cannon Township, well away from the wells that were in question in Belmont”, Beard reported. The City will continue to monitor its water supply as the MDEQ further investigates the sources of the PFOS in the Plainfield Township wells. A copy of the Laboratory Report which was conducted on all Method 357 compounds is available for review at City Hall.
CORNER BAR FIRE UPDATE
September 15, 2017
City Manager Thad Beard has issued this update on the status of the rebuilding of the Corner Bar.
City officials met with the owners of the Corner Bar and Orion Construction to inspect the bracing of the remaining structure and to determine if the building was stable enough to allow the re-opening of N. Main and Courtland Streets to traffic. A decision has made to re-open Courtland west of N. Main and to re-open the northbound lane only on N. Main Street. Heavy cement barricades and steel trash dumpsters have been placed in the southbound lanes of N. Main to act as a shield in the unlikely event that the building would collapse during demolition. This shield will cause the southbound land e to remain closed for several weeks.
The next phase of reconstruction of the Corner Bar involves the demolition of the damaged building and removal of all of the debris. This will likely be several weeks from now. A demolition plan is still being developed by Orion Construction for approval by the City of Rockford.
The City of Rockford continues to meet with the stakeholders of this project on a daily basis. We appreciate the patience and understanding of the community.
We are looking forward to opening the roads and restoring traffic to the businesses on Courtland and Quires that have been affected by the road closures.
There will be lane closures on 10 MILE RD BETWEEN US-131 AND ROGUE RIVER BRIDGE for curb replacement and paving.
CORNER BAR FIRE UPDATE
August 30, 2017
The City of Rockford has issued this update on the status of the rebuilding of the Corner Bar. Owners of the Corner Bar had anticipated that work would begin this week, bracing the walls to prevent the building from collapsing. The construction company hired by the owners had a contractor ready to begin work when the Corner Bar’s insurance company informed the owners that additional bids were required for the bracing before a contractor could be selected. This requirement has delayed any work for at least several days. The owners of the Corner Bar remain optimistic that work on bracing the building will begin next week. As soon as the building is braced and cleared by our city engineers, we will reopen as much of N. Main and Courtland streets as possible.
The city has installed detour signs at the entrances to rear alleys behind the buildings on N. Main and Courtland to encourage traffic to flow back to Squire Street. The businesses on Squires Street are open and easily assessable if the detour routes are followed.
The City of Rockford is doing everything possible to ensure that the work begins soon. We appreciate the patience and understanding of the community as the complex plan of rebuilding the Corner Bar is being developed.
